I believe there are some criteria if a vessel is a boat or a ship
Those with info, please tell us
Thanks
Take SAS Spioenkom as an example

I'd suggest searching through Eugene's (MIA) posts.

Ship has a funnel but boat does not.

So the frigates are boats and the Fleur was a ship?

Consider U-boat and SS (steam ship) Titanic. Frigates would have had a funnel but it was decided to discharge the exhaust into the water under the stern. This reduces heat signature.

Another definition is that a ship has more than one deck, a boat has only one.

So the SAS Drakensberg is a ship and the F 145, F 146, F 147 and F 148 are boats

The debate is as old as the hills.

The Historic Ships Committee in the UK have designated a vessel below 40 tons and 40 feet in length as a boat. However, submarines and fishing vessels are always known as boats whatever their size.

A "boat" has one main deck, whereas a "ship" had two or more main decks.

According the U.S. Naval Institute, a boat, generally speaking, is small enough to be carried aboard a larger vessel, and a vessel large enough to carry a smaller one is a ship.

Some say the best differential between ship and a boat is the relationship between the CoG and metacentric height which causes the vessel to lean in or out of the radius of its turn. Submarines turn in like a motorbike does, hence why submariners always talk about their 'boats'. Ship lean outwards.

"A boat is what you get into when the ship sinks."
