SOUTH AFRICAN NAVY FESTIVAL 17 – 19 MARCH 2017

The South African Navy is tasked to defend and protect South Africa’s coastal border and trade routes, conduct patrols and operations, execute humanitarian work as well as conduct hydrographic surveys. This requires state of the art equipment and highly specialised personnel who are devoted to serving our country. The SA Navy invites the people of South Africa to see what this entails and thereby, foster an understanding of an essential component of the Defence Force.

The Annual South African Navy Festival will once again take place from 17-19 March 2017 in the East Dockyard, Simon’s Town in conjunction with Armscor. This event affords the public a rare opportunity to tour the naval ships and submarines as well as view multi- capability anti-piracy demonstrations of the marines and “get wet” on tug and patrol boat rides.

In addition to the outdoor and indoor capability displays of a working harbour, the arena programme will provide live music and exciting military entertainment. Gates open from 10h00 to 18h00 and entrance is free of charge.

The following highlights include:
• SA Navy Band public outdoor concert at the Selbourne Drydock on Thursday, 16 March at 1900. Entrance Free. (Inclement weather venue: Simon’s Town High School)
• Development Community Street procession opposite Jubilee Square in St Georges Street, Simons Town on Saturday, 18 March at 0900.
• Night Shoot at Lower North Battery on Saturday, 19 March at 20:00.
• HMS CLYDE, British Patrol Vessel will be open for the public.

There will be plenty to see, do, eat and drink at the festival so bring the family and arm yourself with sun protection, comfortable walking shoes and spend the day celebrating the capabilities of our South African Navy – a navy for the people.

A couple of new displays as well on the programme. Should be interesting. I see the silver falcons are on the programme for two displays on Saturday and Sunday.

Dean spotted two tornados heading south today...maybe they'll do a surprise fly past...who knows.

Pictured yesterday evening. To coin the expression...the navy are "getting their ducks in a row". Ships all being nicely positioned ready for the crowds this weekend :D I am looking forward to going onboard HMS Clyde and delighted she is still here for the festival. \:D/

Can you believe it...SAS Mendi part of the festival... :shock:

I'm assuming DKB is on anti-piracy duties after armed forces day?

Wow. I had to look twice there when I saw her pennant number, F148. Did she move to this berth under her own power? I take it she’s being brought back into service because Isandlwana will be heading for her refit soon?

Our ships dont really use their own power to move around the harbour. The tugs do all the work.
Unless it's the OPVs and Um-boats.

I also doubt she will be entering service anytime soon...
If you look closely, her navigational instruments are missing (radars, antennas, etc.). Not even mentioning the internals :(

I know the tugs do most of the work but just wondering whether her mains were started. Hopefully someone on this forum gets a tour of her and can see what she's like inside at the moment. If they're willing to let her be a part of the festival you would think she would have most of her equipment installed. But I guess to the average visitor they wouldn't know the difference.

Always great to see a foreign vessel being a part of the festival :smt023

Mendi has been in DED (Docking and Essential Defect Period) for a long time, but the Navy has at last decided to prioritise her return to service within the next six months (hopefully!) as Isandlwana is due for refit.

Thanks Dean. Thought this may be the case. Will be good to see her back in proper service.

Considering we could not get access today until the afternoon. I am not surprised. I was there from 9am for the parade, until 12h30 and the gates still had not been opened to the public when I gave up and left. :roll: (SAN PR disaster I'm afraid and apparently some City of Cape Town imposed Health & Safety constraints). I left and only returned in the afternoon. As someone who is positive about the SAN...I felt this was a poor show. You can only gauge the expressed anger and disappointment of the queues of folk, many with kids as it is traditionally a school visiting day. Some families were bereft. I found I could not defend the situation whilst being locked out with hardly any info. How I wish it could have been better handled ...whatever the issues were. #-o #-o

I was fortunate to have been inside the Base early, but just have not had time to process any of the photos. Now off to the Base again today ... 8)
