Thanks for the very valid comments Bushpig.

As always, I'm always receptive to requests for improvements/amendments to the forum and sub-forum topics. Whilst this is not a modelling forum per se, there is a very close association between research and modelling. When I was building models, I think I derived more enjoyment from reserching my topic and drawing on the build plans all my mods and enhancements than actually doing the build!

hahaha... this is one way to get forum traffic going.

I suppose it boils down to what you expect from a forum like this. Even this thread suggests a lot of people coming through and looking (738) whilst only a few actually taking the time to comment (13 replies in 2 years) Some of the international sites obviously start with bigger numbers of modelers in the first place and threads very quickly grow to views in the thousands and proportionally a lot more comments. Some also have structured to have WIP forums vs ready for comment etc - this can be overkill.

I personally got involved in this forum mainly because I love modeling, the obvious linkage with the SAAF which is a big part of my history and to learn from people who are so much better than I am. I build non-stop but have never really considered my work good enough to undergo the scrutiny of WIP threads, I have done on a few occaisions and received nothing but fantastic support and constructive comment. I said it right at the start when I found this forum it is a very supportive site. That said it is a little disheartening I will admit to take the time to take photos, go through getting them saved on photobucket, post everything on this site and then get one or two comments (usually from the same people) or even none. I am the first to put my hand up here, I read just about every post but don't comment that often so am just as guilty.

Apologies for the rambling comment but again I would say in this modern world where we are all bombarded with information I don't think it's a case of too few people building and posting, just everyone too busy to get actively involved and post comments.

Hi Bushpig

I hear what you are saying, but I think its important to acknowledge what a gem this forum is. Sure the volumes are low compared to the other main modelling forums, but the quality post ratio is very high.
Dean has created a respectful, supportive, friendly and knowledge filled forum. Not many forums offer this.

I find that on the mainstream sites, members will endlessly argue and debate points making it very tedious to read through the threads. Members post just for the sake of posting, without actually constructively contributing to the discussion at hand.

Also, whilst its a bit of schlep to take photos, load them up and post them. Model photography and writing is a legitimate facet of the hobby, which can be can actually be just as enjoyable as the build itself.

I hope the second paragraph in my post does clearly show my appreciation for this entire site and the people who contribute to it, I do acknowledge twice the amazing support that I have seen displayed. If it didn't and I may have offended anyone I apologise!

In a way I am agreeing with your point of view, some of the overseas sites get way too complicated with sub-forums etc and I do agree that some really petty commenting and cat fighting does happen.

I guess all I was trying to get across is that I love this site, it's a treasure trove of information and there are amazing people who contribute both builds and comments and are very supportive of all levels of skill. The thread started with the question "why so quiet", I was just giving an opinion as to why.

Hi Bushpig

No need to apologize. I don't think anyone took offense, so don't worry about it. Just open honest discussion.

I'm not a modeller but I do enjoy looking at the photos and even occasionally comment. I think it is a strength of this forum that we are not a modelling only forum. The sharing of information and opinions between history boffins, technology geeks (such as myself), newshounds, photographers, modellers and of course the military professionals, all together is what makes this place so interesting.

That's a valid point and I agree with you. When output does not equal input, it becomes more chorish. It's human nature. I don't mean that in a 'I'm taking my ball and and going home' tone. One thing we must keep in mind is that being a small, niche forum, you'll probably find a lot of the views are from guests without accounts, who therefore cannot comment and are just passing through while doing a bit of research.

Hi Avgass

Thats an excellent point you have made.

SAAF subjects, whilst increasing in global popularity is still a very niche subject matter. So perhaps you are correct when you consider that this is the go to expert subject matter forum.

Bushpig & Avgass I agree with your comments and sentiment

Great Forum for SAAF content and research but it can be disheartening when you post something and there is little or no feedback

My contributions here have dwindled mainly because i haven't been building much - very passionate about the hobby but sometimes it it is far easier to pick up the cell phone, iPad or laptop and do "research" than to get set up on the hobby desk - still buying, collecting, and accumulating a notable size stash!
