Nowhere in the article is the actual purpose of the flight confirmed.
The description of the LMG designation is incorrect. The mere fact that the ICAO designation for the South African Air Force (LMG) is used indicates that this is a SAAF military flight. LMG followed by three digits is the standard SAAF flight designation for all flights. If the President is aboard, it will be LMG1, noted as South African One on the radio. Deputy Pres will be LMG2, etc.
A pilot friend, retired from the SAAF, has done some flight planning: Waterkloof to Mauritius, via Beira and Madagascar.
A whopping 8.3 flying hours. (Excludes a few extra minutes for approach and landing).
Flight duty period is the time includes the time spent on ground. Included in this time would be the turnaround times for refueling etc. even pre flight work is included in flight duty period. The flight duty period for that specific route was 12.5 hours. That means they had 4hours ground time for flight planning and refuelings. That’s a feasible task.
And then an additional 2 hour extension on the flight duty period if let’s say refueling was delayed. Making it 6 hours ground time available.
