The Boeing 707 were assigned to 60 Sqaudron, was 60 Squadron also responsible for the air to air refuelling, or was the 707 refueler moved to a different sqaudron? If so what squadron?

All the 707s were flown by 60 Squadron. The aircraft(15, 17 & 19) could be simultaneously configured as tankers and for EW.

The Boeing 707 was operational with 60 Sqn, but withdrawn from service in September 2007.

See www.saairforce.co.za/the-airforce/aircr ... g-707-328c

60 Squadron was not officially disbanded and is in limbo, pending arrival of the A400M which has subsequently been cancelled.

Yip thanx Dean, I read that under the Squadron section, just was not sure weather the Boeing 707's used for refuelling was flown under a different squadron, more of a support squadron and not heavy transport. But I have my answer, thanx guys.

Also thanx Deltawing. Appreciate the quick response

So if 60 squadron will get the A400Ms then what will happen to 28 sqn whose C-130s are being replaced by the A400Ms? Will they be intergrated into 60 sqn or will they be getting different aircraft or will continue to operate the C-130s?

Well even though the C-130's are quite old, the will still continue medium transport duties.Obviously the A400M's would just help relieve a bit of the pressure of the aging C-130's, this now obviously if we were still getting the A400M's

But Foxtrot, that is quite a good question, once the C-130's do retire eventually what will happen to 28 Squadron. SA would then once again have a gap in their transport section......although the A400M would have still been able to make up that gap. Would SA have looked to get new C-130's anyway?????? maybe a question someone else could help us with?
