SAAF to help in Mozambique floods ... again
Date: 25 February 2001
President Thabo Mbeki on Sunday authorised that the SA National Defence Force and medical officials depart for Mozambique to help flood victims. Foreign affairs spokesman Ronnie Mamoepa said Mbeki was responding to an urgent request from the Mozambique authorities for assistance.
The recent floods had affected over 400 000 citizens, had displaced 77 000 and had left 41 people dead.
Mbeki ordered that the SANDF should mobilise four Oryx helicopters, two BK helicopters, two C130 Cargo planes, one King Air helicopter (sic) and Casa plane for humanitarian assistance to Mozambique flood victims.
