In a move that has shocked both SAAF Museum staff and aviation enthusiasts alike, the SAAF Museum has issued a notice saying that all three popular South African Air Force (SAAF) aviation museums will be closed until further notice.
A Facebook posting states the following: “Please be informed that the SAAF Museum (ZWK, PE, & Ysterplaat is closed to civilians and visitors as of today until further notice” (sic).
As from this morning , Wednesday 1 October, the main SAAF Museum at Zwartkop and the two satellite museums located at AFB Ysterplaat (Cape Town) and Port Elizabeth will be closed to the public.
Whilst the Museum management are permanent force members or AMG (Denel) personnel, the majority of the Museum staff are Reserve Force members who receive a limited allocation of days to work a year.
Although no reasons for the closure have been given, it is reliably learnt that the cause of the closure is due to the Reserve Force cancelling all current and future day allocations. This has left the Museum short staffed and thus unable to accommodate visitors.
