SAAF lost 58 pilots last year

A total of 58 pilots, with several years experience each, left the South African Air Force last year, Defence Minister Mosiuoa Lekota said today.

Replying to a question in the National Assembly from Adriaan Blaas (NNP), he said 67 pilots left the air force in 2001.

Of those who left last year, 25 took up better work opportunities, while the contracts of 27 others expired, three left for personal reasons, and three died.

One of the pilots had over 36 years experience, three had 31 to 35 years, six had 26 to 30 years, 10 had 21 to 22 years, eight had 16 to 20 years, 10 had 11 to 15 years, 13 had six to 10 years, and seven between one and five years experience.
