New face for SA pilot training
Date: 12 March 2004
Pupil pilot training in the South African Air Force has undergone a complete and successful transformation. The Air Force also says it is on track in the 10th year of democracy.
The changes in the air had to start on the ground at Central Flying School in Langebaanweg on the West Coast. All Air Force pilots start their careers at the school. Class 104 is the first in the Air Force where pupil pilots from previously disadvantaged communities are in the majority by far. "In 1994 we had an all male class of whites," said Christo Stroebel, a commanding officer at the Central Flying School.
The air force is taking delivery of new aircraft and a new generation of pilots, including women, will be flying the planes.
