The SA Air Force is spending about R10 million in the near-term to upgrade its communications technology and safeguard voice and data transfers against eavesdropping or jamming.

The state arms agency, Armscor, has contracted RDI Communications, part of the Reunert Group, to produce a third-generation very and ultra high-frequency (V/UHF) transceiver. The deal is worth R7.5 million.

A separate contract, worth R1.5 million, has been signed with RDI to develop "a new electronic counter countermeasures (ECCM) technique for V/UHF applications".

Armscor has also paid Denel R599 795 to conduct a communications obsolescence study and avionics upgrade as part of the Oryx mid-life upgrade, and it gave Alcatel a cheque for R1 million to pay for Alcatel 3600 Mainstreet bandwidth management equipment used for ground-based voice and data communications.
