New Presidential jet?
Date: 23 May 2000
President Thabo Mbeki is to get a new official aircraft, despite heavy criticism of the move.
The Afrikaans daily, Beeld, reports Armscor recently sent out tender documents to various aircraft suppliers asking for information. The closing date for the tenders is the middle of August. After the first step, more specific information will be requested from the manufacturers, before a short list of three is drawn up. The best option within the available price range will determine the supplier. This process is expected to be finalised by the end of the year. The availability of the aircraft will also be a consideration, as often supplier's orders are determined months in advance. Major contenders for Mbeki's jet are the Boeing Business Jet (BBJ), the Airbus 319, the Gulfstream V and the Falcon 2000 the latter being the latest version of the current presidential jet. The estimated cost of the aircraft is approximately R300 million. The need for a new aircraft was identified earlier this year, because the current Falcon 900's distance and passenger carrying capacity was insufficient. Currently only 11 passengers can travel with Mbeki, while he often needs at least 20 people to accompany him. A satellite telephone and a sleeping area are further requirements. The final decision regarding the purchase of the aircraft rests with the cabinet.
The aircraft, once purchased, will join the SAAF's 21 Squadron. The VIP unit flies two Falcon 50's and two Citations in addition to the Falcon 900.
