Twenty Avian IVMs were purchased to replace the Avro 504K as an elementary trainer. Serial numbers were from 504 to 523.
After retirement, many of the civilian owned Avians were, once again, impressed into the SAAF at the start of WWII for use to train pilots and staff on the repair and maintenance of aircraft.
