The SAAF acquired two Do 27 aircraft (5430 and 5431) in 1958 for evaluation as a possible replacement for the ageing Auster AOP 6 and 9, but the Cessna 185 Skywagon was chosen instead.
5431 was written-off in a crash near Belfast (Eastern Transvaal) on 12 March 1962, while 5430 was subsequently sold in Mozambique in 1967.
The example with the SAAF Museum is a civilian example obtained by the Museum.
