In order to find a replacement for the Avro 504K in the elimentary training role, the Department of Defence ordered a single example of the Arrow (together with an Avro Avian and DH60M Moth).
The Arrow was shipped to Cape Town and flown to Zwartkop on 6 May 1929. The aircraft was allocated serial 503.
The Avian was chossen and the Arrow was sold in October 1929.
